Borrow his strength..

Today I had a conversation with an aquaintance about marriage and relationships. It was an interesting one because the issue's that she was having in her marriage with her husband are very similair to some of the issue's that Paul and I have already encountered during our 21 years together.

It is concerning to see what happens to a marriage when trauma or tradegy strikes. Marriage isn't easy for anyone, but then throw something into a family which is going to change the dynamics of that family, it can be incrediably overwhelming and at times inconceivably devastating. I am certainly no expert, but I have lived through a catastrophic life changing event. We are not perfect and we still have a long way to go in life together as a couple. When talking with this women I could relate to her struggle's and the issue's that she was expressing. It is the most difficult, trying times in a marriage when something goes wrong that we are not expecting. Paul and I have worked very hard to over come and hurdle the many obstacles placed infront of us. Sometimes we managed to get through them together and sometimes we were not able to stand with one another and we chose to fight some battles alone.
When two people choose to build a life together, we must remember that people change over the course of a life time. We are not always going to be the same person who we were when we walked down the aisle. Sometimes, people don't expect to see their loved one change, and at times we may question our love.
It doesn't mean that your love stops, or that you don't want to continue a life with the person that you married, it means you have to choose to adapt to the change in your spouse. It would be a very unhealthy marriage if you didn't grow as individuals and allow life experiences to influence and revise a part of who you are. Its only natural to evolve as a whole person, but equally important to evolve as a couple. My advise to my friend was simple, as women we must remember that men don't always cope the same as we do. Men and women deal differently in times of disaster. When times were challenging for us, spending weeks at a time in ICU with Braden usually fighting pneumonia, our lives would go on hold. Everything changes..you lose sight of the world around you, nothing is important anymore.

Nothing else matters...however during these moments you have to remember who you are and keep the one you love close, its easy to forget about them. Your own needs are unimportant, and you are certainly not thinking about the needs of your life partner. Unfortunately this is were the fracture in a marriage begins, not on purpose..it happens without intention. The lady who I spoke with today was sharing her thoughts on her husband returning to work and his lack of interest in helping her with the responsibilities of their special needs child at home. This is actually one of the number one complaints in a marriage of families who have a child with special needs or a child who is terminally ill.
Through experiences and befriending many mom's while staying in hospital it was common for the dad's, husbands or significant others to eventually return to work. We as women had difficulty letting them go, we all discussed the fact that we were on our own. Our husbands were not intentionally leaving us or our sick children, it was evenly challenging for them to sit at bedside and feel helpless, or feel like there was nothing they could do. Most dad's did return to work, usually due to financial reason's. I could see the strain on these families, as mom's we become stronger and we tend to go head on and fight through the tough days. We eventually fall under the assumption that we have to do this alone, we forget to include our husbands. They sometimes take a second seat..and again the bow breaks and this is where a marriage can tumble. One of the biggest complaints from Paul was that I was to independant, he became frustrated that I no longer needed him. Reality was I just got use to doing it on my own, I stuggled to let go...if I let him take over, I might just lose control.
It took me years to understand why Paul would return to work even when Braden was struggling in hospital..how could he leave? Why did he not want to be here with us? He did stay through the times of uncertainty, once Braden was cleared and on the mend, Paul would then go back to work. So don't get me wrong, Paul never abandoned myself or Braden, he just chose to go during the recovery time. It was his way of handling the situation, he too was hurting and needed to retreat somewhere for his own mental health, as a man he needed to work it made him feel validated, made him feel worthy. As a mommy I got validation through Braden, through his recovery. I felt worthy everytime he came off of life support or everytime we were sent home after a long battle. Not that Paul didn't feel that as well, but he also had to have the strenghth to hold me up, he had the added bonus of keeping himself strong and capable to deal with me..trust me, that wasn't an easy job!
At the time I was resentful that he could leave and find refuge somewhere else, I guess when we were young and dealing with way to much I didn't realize that he too was suffering just as much as I was. In time we both learned how to communicate and not make assumptions. It's not everyday your life is turned upside down, and it is critical not to forget eachother. These are the moments that we pull together sometimes in silence, learn to speak to one another through your eyes...from across the room. You will be the only two in the world who will feel the same during these times, who will always understand how you feel... just by watching you. Words are not always important, sometimes they mean nothing..hold his hand, borrow his strength, and walk beside eachother.

When in Rome..do as the Roman's do!

There has been a movie that I have been dying to see, so tonight I dragged Paul out to see "When In ROme". It was actually a good movie, we both enjoyed. I have been wanting to see it for more selfish reasons. In about 6 weeks Kailey and along with some friends are heading to Greece and Rome. We are getting so excited, naturally I wanted to get a look at what Rome is going to look like, the movie only enhanced my excitement by 100%. Unfortunately though, as the movie was starting to end so was I. Again I had an overwhelming feeling in my chest and throat, just as I was feeling better this cold hit me like a tidal wave...again! I am so frustrated, today I was really starting to feel better, i was thinking about hitting the treadmill on Monday..hopefully this passes by then and I can get back on the treadmill. Tomorrow, I am going to Toronto with the family to watch Braden, I am looking forward to it..nana and Papa are coming too. I heard this evening that my friend Candace took her children skating...all I have to say is way to go!! Riley is a natural..we will have to co-ordinate a time to take them all again, Kailey would love to give them encouragement and push them along to becoming great skaters!! Well I am off to bed, I hope Paul follows me and is not to long behind me! I hate when he stays up later, its harder to fall asleep! Good night my lovelies!!

Cambridge Tournament...again!!

Okay so I am totally lacking on my blogging and I am sorry! Today was a long, long day. We had 2 games in Guelph plus they played last night as well! I am so tired and still uninspired. SO tonight is short, I am sitting on the cough eating Nibs and watching Couples Retreat with Paul and Kailey. Braden has a friend over so he has no interest in watching a movie with us. We have another game tomorrow and I think Paul and I are going to the movies?? I am looking forward to SUnday, we are having dinner with my parents after they all get back from watching Braden play hockey. Well, good night all...i wish i had more to offer tonight but I am too tired!!
Good luck my girlies, bring it tomorrow...you can do it!!

Rogers Cable....here comes Braden!

I am very excited for Braden this semester he is starting a co-op placement at the Rogers Cable TV Station. He is very aprehensive about it and is incrediably nervous. Tonight he has been worried that he might not be ready for this responsibility. I am more than confident that he is ready, he will be an amazing student and I can trust that he will do his very best. Teenagers don't seem to understand that it is the highschool experiences that can shape our wants and dreams..Braden claims to want to become a very successful movie director/producer, well that will come with very hard work and dedication. He may not feel that he is up for it but he better put his big boy work boots on and get ready to get dirty. This is going to be a wonderful, intriguing opprotunity for him and I know that he is capable. He has much to offer and once he realizes his own strengths and abilities he will excel to new heights...Braden no need to be worried, you will be fabulous in your new placement and we are very proud of you!!

Some things I like..

Ok, so I am being lazy once again this evening! I have actually been fighting a bug these past couple days and today was probably the most tiring of all. I have decided to post a couple of my favorite things, it's not much of a blog but its something. Tomorrow I hope to have some inspiration on a writing topic, I hope some of "my favorite things" will do for tonight!

Who does not love an electric blue Ipod? I would die without mine! I have my Ipod on me at all times, in my car, at the gym, cleaning my house, cooking dinner..where ever I can listen to music I have my Ipod!

Ok seriously, if I had to reccommend any article of clothing I would definately say LuLuLemon's...they are the most comfortable pants you will ever put on your ass. Besides they are guaranteed to make you ass look amazing..i need all the help I can get!!

Starbucks...need I say more? I think my favorite drink on a daily basis would have to be the Chai Latte. But during special holidays I do like to try the different flavored Latte's.

I love Fossil watches, I have a few of them. They are I must say my fav.

Uggs are amazing..I do not have a pair, but Kailey does. When I get the chance to wear them around the house I never want to take them off..so comfortable!!

I love Bono...nothing else to say there! He is my youth, I have spent many many hours listening to U2, I am slowly losing my steam...to tired to process anymore..like I said these are only a few of my favorite things!

Ouch that gotta hurt!!

I really don't feel like blogging tonight, this will be short and sweet. This evening a very close friend of Kailey's hurt herself very seriously during a game of basketball. Unfortunately she had an accident on the court and it may have resulted in a fractured knee cap or even possibly a dislocated knee. This has caused a disastrous halt in her life. There are many many exciting events coming up in the next couple weeks that she may misersbly miss due to her injury. We will remain optimistic, and pray for the best. There has still not been a diagnosis and so therefore there is still hope. If the worst case scenerio happens and our little superstar is not able to play in her sports events then yes we will all be heartbroken. There is no way to make the situation better, but I will be the first to put her life situation in persepective and remind her that she is blessed enough to still have the ability to walk. This situation is only temporary and she will be in top shape come tryouts for next season!! My heart breaks for her, this has definately been a tough year for her, its not fair...she is a fabulous, wonderful, beautifully high spirited chickie who we all love! You are not alone, we are all here with you and we will get you through this together...hang in there and let's hope for the best and continue to stay positive. We know that this is disasterous for you, and if you are unable to play for the rest of the season that will be very unfortunate. I am not going to minimize or downplay the pain and frustration you must be feeling, however your recovery is the most important element for you to focus on, there is no room for sadness or depression. You are a strong girl, and you will get better, stronger and more powerful by the end of this journey! We love you lots..and you are an inspiration to many many people!
CAN YOU DO THIS??...YES YOU CAN!!! xoxox

Leather beds and lemon merangue pie!

Today was great~ I made an awesome dinner we had chicken cordon bleu, and I made a home made lemon merangue pie. It was so good!! I posted a picture of my latest creation, we all enjoyed a piece tonight.

This afternoon a good friend came by to drop off the dog beds that I asked her to OH so kindly sew together for me!

This friend is someone who I am greatful enough to get to spend most of my weekends with. Michelle is honestly my conscious, she totally keeps me in check! She knows right from wrong and is constantly reminding me of that! You see, I tend to break the rules a bit and I sometimes think the world works hard to accomadate me. I know that is slightly arrogant of me, however when I set my mind to something...not much can stop me from getting what I want..is that really a bad thing?
Michelle and I have the kind of friendship that results in no expectations. We can be honest and true with one another and we share so many fascinating conversations. We can talk about parenting, careers, teenagers, preteens, education, marriage and friendships. We have alot in common too..we love to laugh, usually at eachother! We laugh at our girls, our husbands and at our quirkinesses when we share romantic evenings as lovers in Quecbec..inside joke! Love those beaver tails!
Well, she so generously took time from her life to sew together these faux leather beds that I have waited years to have for my puppies. It has always been my intention to order leather dog beds for the dogs, they are easy to clean and do not collect dog hair..the dog hair brushes off so nicely leaving them with a clean look. The problem was I couldn't find leather beds that were priced decently. Most were priced at least 300.00 dollars a bed! That seemed ridiculous to me, finally I realized ok, i will go to Lens Mills store and buy some material and just ask someone to make them for me! The faux leather material that I bought was $40.00 a bed, and $11.00 for the polyester filling. Basically each bead cost me roughly $51.00, again I was so impressed with myself. These beds turned out perfect, they look amazing and the dogs love them. They match my living room superbly.

Finley enjoying her bed...she just loves it!

Harley wasn't too sure at first about his bed, he isn't to much into comfort. He just isn't high maintanence, over the course of the evening though he kept going back to it and giving it a chance, he loves it know!!
