Owning a Yorkie!

Tonight I have a heavy heart. A very close friend of mine's dog went missing, tonight is night two of him gone. I just can't get this out of my head, I don't know what I would do if one of mine went missing. You just have to pray and hope to god that the poor pup finds warmth outside in these winter conditions. Come home safe Elmo...
My mom gave me this Yorkshire terriers Magazine recently, and its filled with all kinds of information about Yorkies. As most of you know I have 2 of them. When I first got Ollie, I remember thiking how difficult can this little  dog be? I mean he is only 4 pounds full grown, how difficult could he be? I was raised wit. h Great Danes, my chidren were raised with Labrador Retrievers....those are dogs! Those are kinds of dogs have a substantial existance in our homes...they have taken up space, time and energy. My thoughts around owning a little dog were simple, easy going, cute, cuddly, sweet, low energy and doesn't need alot of space, food or even exercise. I clearly didn't look too deep into owning a Yorkie. To my surprise....its been ALOT different then I had expected. I knew that I loved the idea of "dressing" up a puppy or small dog. I just fell  in love with all the outfits, collars, jackets and sweaters. Cute right?

I had NO idea how Oliver was about to wrap me around that little paw...and run this whole house, in the blink of an eye..he took over~
This magazine is a little too late really, its full of wonderful information and pretty much nails it around owning a Yorkie.
I am going to share with you 13 points..critical points to owning a Yorkie, none of which I knew.

1. Distract the Owner with Extreme Cuteness
-while the owner is oohin and ahhing over their yorkie, the new terrier is using his magical powers to recieve extra treats...this couldn't be truer, Ollie is forever making me feel guilty...so I give him more and more treats.

2. Start Barking
-People say Yorkies are yappy..they are not necessarily "yappy" they just know how to get what they want. By using that high-pitched bark, they learn to demand what they want. Oliver will bark his high pitched bark for at least 5 seconds, if that doesn't work he'll start nudging me and eventually he'll pee on the floor. SO inorder to save myself from a mess to clean, I get up...and I get him what he wants. Simple as that~

3. Smother with Hair
-Yorkies have learned if they have matted hair the owners will have to spend time on them, brushing and grooming their hair. I can see this is going to be more of an issue with Ella, she has the true Yorkie hair, I am just starting to get her use to the brush and bow's.

4. Misdirect the Human's Attention
-Well this one worked in my home. It is well known fact that Yorkies have a way to misdirect and confuse their owners into how many Yorkies they should own. If you get one...it won't be long till you have another~ No comment.

5.Manipulate the other Pets
-Yorkshire Terriers are smarter than most other dogs and usually can manage to get someone else blamed for bad behaviour. How could such a small dog cause such a big mess?? This isn't too big in our home, thankfully our dogs are very well behaved.

6. Convince the Owners that Housetraining is impossible.
-Apparently Yorkshire Terriers find outdoor toilet facilities demeaning and prefer to eliminate in the house, the same as their owners. The only time we have a problem is on really cold or rainy days. It is true, the little ones don't like to get wet or cold.

7. Take Over Family Planning
-Many Yorkshire Terriers are weary of small children, they cramp their style. Sometimes Yorkies are capable of convincing their owners that the best way to be is childless...
A part of me can agree with this, my children are grown and at a certain time Paul and I had thought of having another baby. Those plans never worked  out, and in time Ollie came to be with us. To be honest I couldn't imagine a baby entering our lives now...not with having two yorkies!

8. Fake being a watchdog.
- It does seem that yorkies are always on alert. Most family members believe that their pups will warn them of danger. Wrong..the Yorkie aims to keep everyone out and it doesn't matter if its a friend or foe. My Yorkies are happy to see others come to the house, Ella is more social already. She loves people, visitors and other dogs. Ollie however doesn't want you anywhere near me!! If you think you are taking my attention away from him..you can think again. He hates most people, and doesn't want people here to take away my time with him...this has been a challange.

9. Complain about the cold, then Complain some more.
-Yorkies only have a single coat. SO they feel the cold weather very quickly and that is why they must wear sweaters and coats.

10. Be Portable.
-+Being tiny is part of their master plan. Why leave them behind? They are small enough to carry where ever we go. This is true in our home too...I seldom leave home without them. Oliver actually suffers from terrible anxiety when I leave the home. Its not so bad that he shivers and shakes or stops eating, and he still will interact with whoever is taking care of him. Its usually just on his time, he will wait hours to come around and make nice with his sitter. Most times I leave to just go get groceries he will just sit and wait for me at the front of the house...it breaks my heart~ Him loves him's mom!

11. Be Nice.
Yorkies get along with everyone, we have not had a problem with any of our other pets in the home. Even though Ollie may not want you to come over and take my attention from him, he still enjoys your company...just don't stay too long.

12. Get Bored.
Yorkies bore easily. Be aware that even though they tolerate being carted in small strollers, and carried in dog purses..the bottom line is they are still dogs and they need exercise. Oliver is a carry on dog, he loves to be up in my arms, never strays to far from my side. As of now, Ella is opposite. She loves to be independant, and LOVES to play. Her and Paul have a very strong relationship because he plays with her all the time. But when she wants snuggles...she comes to momma~

13. Replace the Remaining Family Members in the Owner's Heart...
This is by far the biggest problem in our home :) and I would have to say that this is the truest statement possible with owning a Yorkie. In my home, Finn, Paul and the kids take a close second to Ollie. He is mine..he is my love. I love him more than words can express..he is the sweetest little boy and he is madly in love with me. Somedays it is all about Ollie...and the others don't like that, I think they should be thankful...it could be worse. I could be out drinking and partying all the time, never home, not tending to their needs.
Well there you have it....all the needed information when looking at adding a Yorkshire Terrier to your family. Would it have changed the outcome of my choice to getting a Yorkie, probably not...
Until tomorrow my Zeta's goodnight and god bless~
